Jeremy Guthrie isn't pretending that being called upon to start Game 7 of the World Series isn't a big deal.

"My memories of a Game 7 probably go back to Jack Morris, '91. I remember that game," Guthrie told reporters on Tuesday before his Kansas City Royals routed the San Francisco Giants, 10-0, in Game 6. "I was 12 years old, so certainly could appreciate the effort that he gave and the magnitude of the game, to be able to pitch like he did and win the World Series."

Morris was the ace of that Minnesota Twins team that knocked off an upstart Atlanta Braves squad 23 years ago. Guthrie is far from holding the distinction of a No. 1, and he knows he has to be at or near his best for the Royals to have a shot to win.

Guthrie, an 11-year veteran with only two career playoff starts under his belt, will face 39-year-old Tim Hudson, who is coming off his first World Series start. Hudson allowed three runs in 5⅔ innings in the Giants' Game 3 loss in San Francisco. Guthrie, who was also making his first start in a Fall Classic, held the Giants to two runs in five innings in that same contest.
