The Dodgers won their 90th game of 2017 on Aug. 24. The 2016 Dodgers won their 90th game of the season on Sept. 29. The 2016 Dodgers won the National League West by four games. Just had to put that out there since, you know, it wasn’t entirely clear if the current Dodgers are very good at baseball or not.
The Dodgers are 1 win from tying their 2016 total
Friday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at the latest Dodgers milestone, the torrent of Mets injuries, and a big ol’ basebrawl.

So [does math] the Dodgers are now one win away from tying last year’s record — which again, was good enough to win the NL West — and two from surpassing it, both of which they can easily do before they run out of August games. As Whitney McIntosh pointed out on Thursday night, Los Angeles is now on pace for a record 116 wins after joining the 2001 Mariners as one of the fastest-ever teams to 90 victories.
Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though. Subscribe to our daily MLB newsletter and let us do the heavy lifting for you each morning to find the things you need to see.
There isn’t a whole lot more to say. The Dodgers are matching history and have a chance to make their own. We’ve got more than a month of baseball left for them to keep dominating everyone, or fall short by a game or two, or see their fortunes completely reversed as they deal with injuries and the general cruelty of a game that doesn’t always care how good you are. All we can do, really, is watch to see how it plays out. The Dodgers have all the tools, but as always in baseball, the question is if that’ll translate into results.
- Rich Hill getting another no-hitter would have been real cool, especially if he did it over 10 innings, but everyone except Hill and the Dodgers ended up getting something far better and more memorable because he didn’t.
- The Yankees and Tigers got into an actual fight. Not a dancing around each other and pulling on jerseys “fight,” but one with punches and takedowns and both benches clearing and cheap shots and an army of people trying to pull Aaron Judge away from it all.
- We ranked the reasons people were ejected from the Tigers-Yankees game after the fight, even though we’re confused about how Judge was not one of them.
- Yankees manager Joe Girardi called out Brad Ausmus and the umpires following the game.
- Justin Verlander took to Twitter for a meme reaction to the fight.
- Hank Aaron is the reason Hill is responsible for the first-ever walk-off homer to break up a no-hitter. No, really!
- Thanks to the CBA, the Twins might have reason to give ByungHo Park another chance in September.
- The Zack Greinke trade ended up bringing back one of the best prospect packages of the last 15 years.
- Johnny Cueto is almost certainly returning to the Giants for 2018, and as Grant Brisbee points out, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
- Zack Wheeler was shut down for 2017, and man, the Mets’ injury situation is even worse than you imagined.
- Speaking of the Mets, Terry Collins isn’t expected to be back to manage them in 2018.
- Yandy Diaz missed notching a cycle on Thursday by just a few inches.
- Texas and Mexico both advanced to their respective title games in the Little League World Series.
- It’s been a rough year for the Phillies, but hey, they have Rhys Hoskins, who has only been rough to opposing pitchers.
