"Two of the best welterweights in the world," according to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), have verbally agreed to fight each other on Sat., Oct. 29, 2011, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Company president Dana White today confirmed that former champions B.J. Penn and Carlos Condit will square off in the UFC 137: "St. Pierre vs. Diaz" co main event.
UFC 137 Fight Card: B.J. Penn Vs. Carlos Condit Fight Announced, Will Serve As Co Main Event
It's a 170-pound bout that could determine the division's next number one contender, with UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre taking on Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz in a "super" main event later that same evening.
Penn and Condit actually did their own public matchmaking on Twitter earlier this week, a pairing that apparently made enough sense for the promotion to make it a reality. One that also leaves top-ranked Jon Fitch -- who was supposed to immediately rematch Penn earlier this year before injuries derailed the possibility -- out in the cold.
The fight against Fitch, which ended in a majority draw, was the most recent performance for "The Prodigy." Penn, a former welterweight and lightweight champion, registered a first round knockout of Matt Hughes in his triumphant 170-pound return in Nov. 2010.
Condit, meanwhile, most recently handed Dong Hyun Kim his first-ever career loss at UFC 132, finishing the South Korean with a devastating flying knee knockout. It marked his fourth consecutive win inside the Octagon.
To date, the UFC 137 fight card, which is subject to change, looks like this:
- Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz
- B.J. Penn vs. Carlos Condit
- Matt Mitrione vs. Cheick Kongo
- Mirko Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson
