Although Jimmie Johnson was able to make up ground on points leader Carl Edwards last weekend in Pocono, it was all erased Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.
Jimmie Johnson Unable To Recover From Early Spin
Qualifying in the 21st spot, Johnson’s day only got worse when the No. 48 spun exiting the second turn just nine laps into the race. Although the car did not make contact with the wall or another driver, the incident ground the sway bar off the right front of the car.
Taking multiple laps to change the sway bar, Johnson fell multiple laps down and was never able to fully recover. Finishing the day 27th, Johnson recorded only his third finish of the year outside the top 20 and fell three spots in the standings to fifth.
While Sunday’s results were uncharacteristic of their performance as of late, the five-time defending series champion has struggled at Michigan in the past. In 19 starts, Johnson has only two top fives and seven top 10 finishes, with nine finishes of 15th or worse.
Perhaps the No. 48 team are glad Michigan is not among the final 10 tracks that make up the Chase.
