NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Point Standings: Carl Edwards’ Top-Five Finish Results In Expanded Lead

Carl Edwards more than doubled his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points lead on Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, finishing fifth while his nearest competitors faltered.

Jimmie Johnson had been just seven points behind Edwards heading into Michigan, but fell three spots to fifth place after a 27th-place finish.

And Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had been 10 points behind, finished 21st.

As a result, Edwards now leads second-place Kevin Harvick by 20 points with 11 races before the Chase begins. Earnhardt Jr. remained third in the standings, followed by Kyle Busch and Johnson.

Johnson was the biggest loser in terms of points, while race winner Denny Hamlin and Paul Menard were the biggest gainers (up three spots apiece).

Hamlin is now ninth in the point standings following his win.
