A heavy snowstorm in the southwest Virginia region prompted NASCAR to postpone the Cup Series and Truck Series races scheduled for Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
NASCAR Cup, Truck series races at Martinsville postponed due to snow
Both races will be run Monday, with the Truck Series race going green at 11 a.m. ET and the Cup Series race at 2 p.m. ET.
NASCAR will run the Truck Series race at 11 a.m. ET, with the Cup Series race slated for approximately 2 p.m. ET. Both races will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
The postponement comes after upwards of 6 inches of snow fell in the southwest Virginia region Saturday night. The snow is expected to clear by mid-Sunday morning, but with local emergency services needing to direct its attention elsewhere and with travel difficult NASCAR officials met early Sunday morning and determined the races needed to be pushed back a day.
This marks the first Cup Series race to be postponed by snow since March 1993 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
“Way more snow than anticipated last night-Met with track/local authorities this morning-resources need to be dedicated to local community-roads-trees down, etc.,” tweeted Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president of competition and chief racing development officer.
Martin Truex Jr. will start on the pole in the Cup Series race after rain washed out qualifying on Saturday, with NASCAR set the starting lineup via owner points. The Truck Series race will resume at the point it was suspended Saturday with Ben Rhodes leading on Lap 23.
According to meteorologist and SB Nation contributor Brian Neudorff, the forecast on Monday is expected to be a high of 49 degrees with little chance for rain.
