Longtime Indiana Pacers big man Jeff Foster has announced his retirement from the NBA after 13 seasons, according to Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star. Foster, who has played in only 11 games this year, departs after back pain caused his career to be derailed.

“It’s with deep regret that I have to conclude my basketball career,” Foster in a statement. “I’ve given my all to the Pacers and the community the last 13 years. I had hoped to be able to finish the season, but unfortunately my back problems prevented that from occurring. I want to thank the Simon family and the Pacers’ organization for 13 memorable years.”

Foster was acquired in a draft-day trade from the Golden State Warriors in 2000 and remained with the Pacers' franchise since, surviving the Malice At The Palace brawl that broke up a sure championship contender in 2005. His effectiveness had diminished since suffering the first of several back injuries in December of 2009.

Over the course of his career, Foster averaged 4.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game in 20.6 minutes per game. His strongest year was 2004-05, when he averaged seven points and nine rebounds per game as a part-time starter.
