Through 20 minutes, San Diego State-BYU is living up to the hype. Jimmer Fredette has 13 points to lead BYU to a 38-35 halftime lead, SDSU’s Kawhi Leonard has been excellent (10 points, eight rebounds), and the house is rocking in San Diego.
No. 7 BYU Leads No. 6 San Diego State, 38-35, At Halftime
BYU’s controlled this one since early in the first half. Fredette’s decision-making was superb as the Cougars built a lead that stretched to 10 points at its widest, and he was able to come off screens for open jumpers and dish out of double teams.
But a late Aztecs run — started by an ill-fated 40-foot pull-up from Fredette — made the game much closer as the half came to an end. Couple that with the facts that Jimmer’s shooting has been substandard (five-of-13) and his prodigious foul shooting has been neutralized (Jimmer didn’t take a free throw in the first half), and San Diego State should be feeling pretty good about its comeback chances.
The feel of the game has been incredible, too: a rowdy San Diego State crowd has been into it from the opening tip at 11:00 a.m. Pacific, and many are in fake missionary outfits to mock BYU’s Mormonism.
