If a report from ESPN’s Andy Katz is to be believed, Texas Tech University is on the verge of hiring Billy Gillispie as their new basketball coach, a little more than a week after the school parted ways with Pat Knight. Pat, the son of legendary Indiana and former Texas Tech coach Bob Knight, coached the team for three full seasons, plus 10 games in the 2007-08 season after his father’s retirement.
Billy Gillispie To Replace Pat Knight As Texas Tech Basketball Coach, According To Report
From Katz, on Wednesday:
Unless something happens this week to jeopardize a deal, Texas Tech and Billy Gillispie should reach an agreement soon. Gillispie would be the right fit for the Red Raiders and should be able to energize an apathetic fan base by putting out a hard-nosed product.
Gillispie worked wonders at UTEP and Texas A&M before making a big move to Lexington to coach the Kentucky Wildcats, but that job didn’t quite work out as planned, and Gillispie parted ways with the university after two seasons. By all accounts, despite his failings at Kentucky, he would be a fantastic hire for the Red Raiders.
