Pat Knight’s firing as Texas Tech’s basketball coach is now official, thanks to confirmation from a school spokesman to the Associated Press.
Pat Knight Fired As Texas Tech Basketball Coach, School Confirms
Knight will coach the Red Raiders through the Big 12 Tournament, and presumably through any subsequent postseason play this year, should they pull off a miraculous run through a conference tournament with titans Kansas and Texas.
Knight’s approach to coaching was never his problem: he was the temperamental antithesis of his father, preferring humility to gruffness, according to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. But the younger Knight could not get Texas Tech clicking after taking over from his father in February 2008, compiling a 50-60 career record in Lubbock.
Dodd also floats Billy Gillespie, former Kentucky and Texas A&M coach, as a possible successor at Texas Tech. Gillespie’s name gets floated for many of these openings, though, and it’s dubious whether an administration still dealing with the fallout of the Mike Leach era would take a chance on Gillespie and his checkered past.
