Matt Painter Remains Purdue Basketball Coach After Missouri Meeting

After a flurry of reports that Purdue Boilermakers coach Matt Painter would take over the Missouri Tigers job vacated by Mike Anderson, Painter has officially agreed to a new eight-year contract to remain at Purdue.

Painter, in a statement released by the school to announce his re-signing, plays up the new facilities he’ll have to work with in the future. The amount of resources allocated by the school to the athletic program was thought to be a point of contention late in the process:

I am extremely excited about continuing my career at Purdue. I believe we have built something very special. At the same time, I feel we have much more ahead of us to accomplish.

There’s a lot to be excited about right now with Purdue basketball. We are moving into our new offices and locker room complex over the next couple of weeks. Our program is built on hard work, and we are ready to get back to improving as a team and a staff.

At the end of the day, my heart is at Purdue, and this is a place where I want to win a national championship.

The courting of Painter by both Missouri and Purdue made for perhaps the second-most confounding coaching juggle of the offseason, both of which involved Mizzou. Anderson was reported to be just about to sign with either Arkansas or Missouri for several days, and the Painter story was pretty much just as complicated.

And both ended with the Tigers looking for their next coach candidate. Now where does Missouri turn?
