Despite a season’s worth of doubt and criticism, after six weeks of the college football season LSU remains unbeaten. So is this the week the Tigers make a big leap forward in the college football polls?
College Football Rankings: LSU Makes Its Case As Other Unbeaten Teams Fall
The No. 12 Tigers’ win over Florida could spark a lot of movement in the AP and coaches polls, which will come out early Sunday afternoon. In addition to LSU’s signature win of its season, a few other unbeaten teams lost on Saturday:
- No. 9 Arizona fell to 4-1 to Oregon State, 29-27, a loss that should usher the Wildcats out of the top 10.
- No. 18 Michigan fell to 4-1 with its home loss to No. 17 Michigan State, which remains unbeaten at 6-0.
- No. 1 Alabama, of course, fell to 5-1 with its 35-21 road loss to No. 19 South Carolina.
Meanwhile, there were a few more eyebrow-raising results just outside last week’s top five teams:
- No. 8 Auburn held on to beat Kentucky on the road, 37-34; Auburn moved to 6-0 as Kentucky fell to 3-3.
- No. 11 Arkansas (4-1) beat unranked Texas A&M by a touchdown, 24-17.
- No. 7 Nebraska thrashed previously unbeaten Kansas State, 48-13, on Thursday to move to 5-0.
- No. 13 Miami is well on its way to getting pounded by Florida State.
With No. 6 Oklahoma idle after beating Texas a week ago, Nebraska could be the team to leapfrog into the top 5, depending on how far Alabama slips.
The next questions come with the top 10. Does Auburn slip out with its narrow win over Kentucky? Does Arkansas move back into the top 10, and does LSU join them? Or is it one or the other for the two SEC squads?
LSU now has wins over four SEC teams, including the win over No. 14 Florida today, and it also has wins over West Virginia and North Carolina -- not exactly out-of-conference slouches. (The Tigers’ first cupcake comes next Saturday against McNeese State ... followed by a game at Auburn)
This much we know: We’ll have a new No. 1 team (and if you have any thoughts regarding who that should be, please check out our poll). The rest we’ll have a much better idea about in about 13 hours.
