Alabama goes right back to work and wastes no time in opening up a more serious lead on Auburn. Greg McElroy hits Preston Dial for a 13-yard pass to convert on 1st-and-10 -- but on the second play, he finds Julio Jones directly in his line of vision and launches a 68-yard touchdown pass.
Cam Newton is sacked on first and second down of Auburn's next series, and his pass on 3rd-and-24 falls short. Tigers punt.
Brace yourselves for something truly alarming: The Tide are about to score again. McElroy and Jones once again convert on first down. A sack on Greg McElroy is ameliorated by a celebration penalty on noted Auburn bully Nick Fairley. No matter: Four plays later, Darius Hanks catches a 12-yard touchdown pass from McElroy, and as time in the first quarter expires, Auburn is pounding out another short-yardage drive. At the end of the first quarter, Alabama leads Auburn, 21-0.
