John Brantley Injury: Florida QB’s Status Still Unknown

Florida coach Will Muschamp had little information to share about John Brantley's status following the Gators' loss to Alabama. All Muschamp would confirm was that Brantley suffered a "lower leg injury," which was obvious to anyone who saw the senior quarterback limp off the field after twisting his right knee awkwardly while being sacked just before halftime. From the AP:

“When we lost John, that took the wind out of our sails,” said Muschamp, who said he would know more about Brantley’s injury Sunday. “I haven’t even talked to the doctor yet. I have no idea.”

It was an ugly hit, but it’s impossible to say until he’s examined further if he merely tweaked the knee or suffered a more serious injury such as a torn ACL or MCL. For what it’s worth, Gators running back Chris Rainey isn’t too concerned:

“He wasn’t crying. It looked to me like it wasn’t that bad. I hope he’ll be all right.”

Jeff Driskel, who replaced Brantley after halftime, struggled greatly against Alabama, but Muschamp refused to pin all the blame on the true freshman:

“The quarterback has got to have guys play well around him,” he said. “Jeff didn’t have much of a chance. Generally, when you have a guy hitting you in the throat, you do overthrow it.”
