The Memphis Tigers have "relieved" Larry Porter of his football coaching duties, the school announced Sunday. Porter played for the Tigers before returning to lead them to a 3-21 mark over two seasons in charge. Athletic director R.C. Johnson released a statement:
Larry Porter Fired, Memphis AD R.C. Johnson Reportedly Retiring
Larry Porter will no longer coach Memphis football, the school announced.
“We want to thank Coach Porter for his efforts as our football coach but believe that it is in the best interest of our program to make a change at this point,” said Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson.
“We were proud to have Larry Porter, one of our former football lettermen, as our head coach and wish him nothing but the best in his future athletic endeavors.”
Speaking of Johnson, Memphis’ NBC affiliate is reporting he’ll announce his retirement at a Monday press conference. He’s been the school’s AD since 1995, when he came over from Temple, and has a contract good through 2013. A noon press conference is referenced in the program’s release on Porter, along with the note that President Dr. Shirley Raines, though no specifics regarding Johnson’s employment are mentioned.
