Steelers Coach Randy Fichtner Wants Memphis Coaching Job, According To Report

Current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach and former Memphis Tigers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner is interested in the vacant Memphis head coaching job, according to sources.

Current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks coach and former Memphis Tigers offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner is interested in the vacant Memphis head coaching job, according to several sources and the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

“I think he’d be a perfect fit,” said former Tigers assistant Wayne Weedon, a member of the U of M radio broadcast team and an assistant on the same Memphis staff with Fichtner in the early 1990s.

“Randy’s been here before, and he knows what it takes to recruit players here,” Weedon said. “And both times he’s been here we’ve won.”

Fichtner has spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach for the Steelers, which includes two Super Bowl appearances. After three seasons as the team’s wide receivers coach, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2010, working with Ben Roethlisberger.

Fichtner was previously the quarterbacks coach at Memphis between 1990 and 1993 and offensive coordinator for Tommy West between 2001 and 2006.

Other coaches who have been mentioned as possibilities include Arkansas State coach Hugh Freeze, Louisiana Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth and former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt.
