Former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson visited the Auburn football team on Tuesday as he looks for a new college football team, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. After it was clear he was not going to be the starting quarterback for the Wolfpack in 2011 if he returned to the team, Wilson asked for and received a release from his scholarship.
Russell Wilson Considering Auburn, Wisconsin Transfers, According To Reports
Auburn is the first school that Wilson has visited, but he is also reportedly interested in joining Wisconsin. Auburn needs a replacement for 2010 Heisman winner Cam Newton.
However, Wilson’s baseball career complicates things--or is it that his football career complicates baseball? Wilson received a $250,000 signing bonus after being a Colorado Rockies fourth round draft pick in 2010. He would, the Citizen-Times reports, need to return a significant portion of it should he return to football. Not making things easier for the Rockies, Wilson would miss the final month of the season.
Wilson’s desire may stem from his struggles playing for the Low-A Asheville Tourists this season. Through 38 games, Wilson has a .216 batting average and 53 strikeouts in 116 at-bats.
