Michigan Spring Game Results: Offense And Defense Shine In Annual Intrasquad Matchup

The 2012 Michigan Football Spring Game ended with the Blue squad defeating the White squad 17-0 Saturday afternoon. That score is misleading, however, as “Blue” squad was comprised entirely of the offense and the “White” squad the defense. In truth, both sides had their moments, though a few a players in particular shined through.

Denard Robinson played just the opening series for Blue, going 2-for-3 passing for 13 yards. Junior Devin Gardner and redshirt freshman Russell Bellomy took the rest of the team's snaps under center the rest of the day. Gardner -- projected to be Robinson's top backup once the regular season starts -- looked uncomfortable at times. He threw an interception to sophomore cornerback Blake Countess on his first possession. Bellomy looked better, though he wasn't asked to do much. He threw for 40 yards on 4-for-6 passing.

Sophomore running back Thomas Rawls scored both of the Blue team's touchdowns, the first coming from over 20 yards out. The 5'10, 219-pound bruiser broke several tackles on the highlight run. He is expected to back up redshirt junior Fitzgerald Toussaint this season.

Roughly 25,000 fans showed up in Michigan Stadium for the game. The numbers might have been greater, but an early threat of rain kept some away. The game raised $260,888 for the Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
