Alabama Crimson Tide super fan Harvey Updyke is currently on trial facing charges of several counts of desecration of a venerated object, first-degree criminal mischief and unlawful damage or vandalism of a crop facility. Updyke pleaded innocent to the allegation that he poisoned Toomer's Oaks, potentially killing the Auburn landmark after the 2010 Iron Bowl.
Harvey Updyke Confesses To Poisoning Trees, According To Report
Harvey Updyke, charged with poisoning Auburn’s famous Toomer’s Oaks, surprisingly admits to the crime he’s charged with.
Surprisingly on Tuesday, Updyke admitted he poisoned the trees despite the fact that he’s currently on trial.
“Did I do it? Yes,” Updyke told Andrew Yawn of The Auburn Plainsman at the Lee County Justice Center in Opelika. “They’re going to find me guilty... it’s a done deal,” Updyke said. “I don’t think I’m going to get a fair trial.”
According to Yawn, Updyke admitted that the trial has taken a physical toll as he’s lost around 62 pounds since his arrest, is taking 18 different kinds of medication, and had difficulty breathing during jury selection.
“Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and just wish that you hadn’t done something?” Updyke told Yawn. “I hope they live.”
The fate of the oak trees is still unknown.
