SB Nation College Football Hall Of Fame: Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne Inducted By Fan Vote

It was probably an easier call than the early votes made it look, but Tom Osborne is in the SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame.

It’s a little bit difficult to distill just how good Tom Osborne was into words. Not only is he one of the winningest coaches of all times, he’s also a coach that won at an incredible clip in terms of winning percentage. If Bear Bryant was the easy choice for the selection committee, Tom Osborne was as close as it came for the fan poll [editor’s note - even if Nebraska fans did resort to Big 8 tactics]. Corn Nation found this way to put it into words:

In his 25 years of coaching, Osborne's teams never lost more than three games in a season and never won less than nine. His teams finished in the top 15 in 24 of those years, and in the 90s his Nebraska Cornhuskers reeled off the greatest record in a five-year span of any team in college football history (60-3).

His 1995 team is considered by many to be the best college football team in history. He finished with a 255-49-3 record, which at the time of his retirement was the highest winning percentage (83.6%) of any active Division IA coach.

Tom Osborne won with 75 percent of the vote -- and many of those votes were legitimate. Osborne joins Bear Bryant, who won at Alabama, Texas A&M and Kentucky(!), as the first two coaches in the SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame.

The SB Nation College Football Hall of Fame is a summer project involving all of the network’s excellent college football blogs. Each community could nominate five of its own for inclusion, with 10 of those nominees being inducted by our selection committee, which included reps from most FBS conferences. The remaining 10 were chosen by public vote.
