The San Diego Chargers are in complete control in the third quarter, leading the San Francisco 49ers, 24-0. After the Chargers took to the air for the first two touchdowns of the game, it was Mike Tolbert finding the end zone in the third, this time out-muscling the San Francisco defense from one-yard out. After comically chasing down Ted Ginn on a punt return in the first quarter, Tolbert kept his hat on this time, lowering the boom to put the Chargers up by four scores.
49ers Vs. Chargers: Mike Tolbert Plunges Into The End Zone As Bolts Continue To Pitch A Shutout
The 49ers saw their best chance to get on the board so far, an 85-yard kickoff return that appeared to be a touchdown by Ted Ginn, called back because of an illegal hands to the face penalty to open the half. Instead of a spark, in the form of that kickoff return for a touchdown, the 49ers were forced to try and move the ball against San Diego’s stout defense. The results were predictable and the Niners went three-and-out.
San Diego put together a grinding drive, using 14 plays covering 58 yards, ending with Tolbert’s run. Faced with a fourth and one from the San Francisco three, the Chargers opted to go for it, using Tolbert to convert. Although Rivers has been lights out, the Chargers changed it up, choosing to utilize Tolbert and Ryan Mathews on the drive.
Midway through the third quarter, San Diego leads San Francisco, 24-0.
