49ers Vs. Chargers: Justin Smith Ejected As San Francisco Is Blown Out

SB Nation's Niners Nation summed up well the San Francisco 49ers 34-7 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Thursday Night Football: "It's a game where everything went wrong, or according to the rest of the world: everything went right." Indeed it all went "right" because we all expected the Chargers to roll in this game and that's exactly what they did.

This is an especially frustrating day for San Francisco. The 49ers are basically eliminated from the playoffs -- tiebreakers could keep them in but it's unlikely -- and they saw one of their defensive leaders get ejected. Justin Smith was ejected in the third quarter for "intentionally" making contact with an official that tried to break up a shoving match between he and the Chargers' Kris Wilson.

For his part, Smith says it wasn’t intentional.

"I wasn't even aware it was an official at first," Smith said. "It was me and the tight end and next thing I know, there's an arm and just a reaction. A rule's a rule. If you touch an official, you're out. It is what it is. Unfortunately, I couldn't be out there and play."
The league office will take a look at the situation and, if they find he's done something wrong, he can expect a fine from the league.
