NFL Playoff Scenarios: At 5-9, 49ers Are Still Alive In NFC West Race

The San Francisco 49ers started the season 0-5 but rebounded to win five of their next eight giving them a 5-8 record as they entered Thursday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers. Of course, they were stream rolled in San Diego moving them to 5-9.

Even at 5-9, the 49ers are still alive in the NFC West. The St. Louis Rams and Seattle Seahawks are currently tied for first place at 6-7. The best San Francisco can finish is 7-9. That means that the easiest way for them to get in is the Rams and Seahawks losing out.

The Rams finish the season against the Chiefs and 49ers at home and then the Seahawks on the road. The Seahawks finish the season against the Falcons, on the road to face the Bucs and then back home to host the Rams. The 49ers finish the year on the road against the Rams then hosting the Cardinals.

It’s unlikely San Francisco makes the playoffs but by no means is it impossible. The way the NFC West has gone this season, asking the top two teams to lose out isn’t a stretch.

Then again, asking the 49ers to win two in a row is a stretch.
