The San Francisco 49ers are moving on from the Mike Singletary era as the team announced late Sunday night that they have relieved him of his duties. Because of the wacky NFC West, the 49ers still had playoff hopes in Week 16 but those ended with the 49ers lost to the Rams on Sunday.
Mike Singletary Fired; Says He’s Sorry He Couldn’t Give 49ers Fans More
Shortly after the game, 49ers ownership wouldn’t commit to Singletary beyond this week. Shortly after that, news surfaced that he had been fired. And soon after that, Singletary issued a statement:
One of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers. What made it so special were the players. They were some of the most outstanding men I have ever been around in my life. The coaches were truly professionals. I wish the 49ers nothing but the best. I am thankful to the York family for having given me the opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL. I am indebted to them for that. I am also thankful for the Faithful fans, I am just sorry I couldn’t give them more.
Singletary knows he has a long career in this league, and knows he underachieved, so his statement is focused on a classy exit. Besides, he could have written that statement two months ago.
