New England Patriots WR Wes Welker will be benched at the beginning of today’s playoff game against the New York Jets, CBS reports. Pats coach Bill Belichick was displeased with Welker’s foot-happy press conference, which featured multiple shoehorned-in references to feet and toes in an attempt to tweak Jets coach Rex Ryan.
Wes Welker Benched Against New York Jets For Putting His Foot In His Mouth
With Welker kicking up his feet on the bench, other receivers like Deion Branch will need to step up. Belichick doesn’t often put the boot to a player like this, but he clearly doesn’t stand for this kind of behavior. Pats fans might not be able to stand it, but if there’s one thing the New England system is good at it’s filling the shoes of a player who can’t toe the rubber. Wait, that’s a baseball thing.
Welker did not sit very long at all, already fair catching a punt at the end of New York’s first possession, though he’s now sitting out New England’s first offensive series. This is a very confusing punishment. He was seen warming up before the game as usual.
