The Atlanta Falcons clinched their first NFC South title since 2004 and their first No. 1 seed since 1980 with a 31-10 popping of the Carolina Panthers. In John Fox’s last game, the Cats left no doubt in their status as the team most deserving of the 2011 No. 1 draft pick.
NFL Week 17 Scores And Results: Falcons Clear Up NFL Playoff Picture, Clinch Home Field Against Panthers
The Falcons held a 31-3 lead until the closing seconds, beating the Panthers on every line of the box score except rushing yards. I’ve watched the Panthers three times this year, and they do this thing where they start running the ball more during garbage time. It’s really weird.
Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw two touchdowns and 239 yards, while Panthers WR Brandon LaFell caught 63 yards worth of passes and broke a 60-yard end around to give Carolina at least one bright spot for next year.
The Panthers now have their pick of several promising draft prospects, while the Falcons will wait to see who emerges from the NFC wild card round.
