It took several tries and two turnovers, but the Washington Redskins have finally broken through and eaten into the New York Giants’ lead. On the first play of a fourth-quarter drive with roughly six minutes remaining in the ball game, Rex Grossman hit Anthony Armstrong for a 64-yard touchdown to cut the Giants’ lead to 17-14.
Giants Vs. Redskins: Rex Grossman Hits Anthony Armstrong For 64-Yard TD
Armstrong was wide open on the play, torching Perry Fewell’s Cover 2 scheme down the middle of the field for the lengthy score. Grossman now has 317 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Armstrong leads the Redskins with 84 receiving yards and a touchdown.
New York gets the ball back with just under six minutes remaining in regulation. They need a win, plus a Green Bay Packers loss, to sneak in as the NFC’s sixth seed in the NFL playoffs. At the time of this update, the Packers were clinging to a 10-3 lead over the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field. Should both the Giants and Packers lose, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - who earlier today defeated the New Orleans Saints 23-13 - would sneak into the NFL playoffs.
Buckle up, NFL fans. This is going down to the wire.
