The New York Giants needed a win and a loss by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to make the NFL playoffs. They got the former in the form of a 17-14 win over the Washington Redskins. They did not get the latter; Green Bay defeated Chicago 10-3, officially eliminating the Giants from post-season contention.
Eli Manning hit Mario Manningham for a 92-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter for the game’s decisive points. Manning threw for 243 yards and that touchdown, and Brandon Jacobs added 49 rushing yards and his own touchdown.

It took several tries and two turnovers, but the Washington Redskins have finally broken through and eaten into the New York Giants’ lead. On the first play of a fourth-quarter drive with roughly six minutes remaining in the ball game, Rex Grossman hit Anthony Armstrong for a 64-yard touchdown to cut the Giants’ lead to 17-14.
Armstrong was wide open on the play, torching Perry Fewell’s Cover 2 scheme down the middle of the field for the lengthy score. Grossman now has 317 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Armstrong leads the Redskins with 84 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Santana Moss chipped in an 18-yard reception, and then Keiland Williams took a beautifully-executed screen pass 23 yards to get the ball down to New York’s four-yard line. Two plays later, Grossman hit Davis for the score.
