The New York Giants needed a win and a loss by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to make the NFL playoffs. They got the former in the form of a 17-14 win over the Washington Redskins. They did not get the latter; Green Bay defeated Chicago 10-3, officially eliminating the Giants from post-season contention.
NFL Playoff Picture: Giants Eliminated, Beat Redskins 17-14
Eli Manning hit Mario Manningham for a 92-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter for the game’s decisive points. Manning threw for 243 yards and that touchdown, and Brandon Jacobs added 49 rushing yards and his own touchdown.
Rex Grossman hit Anthony Armstrong for a 64-yard touchdown with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to cut New York’s lead to 17-14, but the Redskins’ offense - so good all day long, with Grossman throwing for 336 yards and two scores - couldn’t overcome four turnovers late in the game. It’s fairly simple for the Giants: win the turnover battle, win the game, and that’s exactly what they did today.
Unfortunately, Green Bay’s win over Chicago officially eliminates the Giants from post-season contention. The Giants finish the year 10-6, while the Redskins fall to 6-10 as Mike Shanahan’s first year with the club wraps up.
