Matthew Stafford Injury: MRI Scheduled For Lions QB

Matthew Stafford tweaked his right leg on the Detroit Lions' final possession of Sunday's loss to the Falcons, limping off the field after failing to convert on fourth-and-10. It was a bitter end to a dismal day in which Stafford posted season lows in completion percentage (46.9), passing yards (183) and passing touchdowns (one).

Neither the extent or exact nature of the injury was immediately known. He appeared to injure either his right knee, right ankle or both joints, but he refused to share with the media after the game exactly what area of his leg was hurting, according to Justin Rogers of MLive.com.

In any case, Stafford did reveal that he plans to undergo a precautionary X-ray, and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that he’ll undergo an MRI. Stay tuned this week for more information as it becomes available.

For what it’s worth, Stafford didn’t seem overly concerned -- he insisted he would have tried to finish the game had Detroit regained possession before the clock ran out. “I was going to give it a try, give it a go,” he said, according to MLive.com. “Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to, but yeah, I was going to give it a try.”

Stafford has missed 19 games over the two and a half years he's been in the NFL, mostly due to injuries to his shoulders. His ability to stay healthy this season is one of the biggest reasons why the Lions opened with five straight wins, and the primary reason why Calvin Johnson leads the NFL with 10 touchdowns. Needless to say, Detroit's newfound status as one of the league's better teams hinges on his continued presence in the lineup.
