Vikings Vs. Raiders: Refs Incorrectly Count Downs, Nearly Force Minnesota Punt

Luckily for the Minnesota Vikings, their coaches are better at math than NFL referees. Their arithmetic acumen got them an early touchdown agains the Oakland Raiders.

The near mix-up happened in the first quarter of Sunday's game. After a holding penalty negated a Percy Harvin touchdown on first down, the refs mistakenly called it second down. A couple incompletions later, the down marker read fourth down and the Vikings prepared to punt.

But a Vikings coach noticed the mistake and alertly made sure a timeout got called. During the ensuing stoppage of play, the refs realized their mistake and correctly made it third down and didn’t charge the Vikings with a timeout.

On the third-and-8 play, quarterback Chris Ponder completed a short pass to Harvin that the wide receiver turned into a first down that got 15 yards tacked onto it by a defensive face-mask penalty. On the next play, Adrian Peterson rushed 12 yards for a go-ahead touchdown.
