Arizona Cardinals Remain Favorite For Kevin Kolb Following 2011 NFL Draft

For the last few months many 2011 NFL mock drafts had the Arizona Cardinals selecting QB Blaine Gabbert at the fifth overall pick. Draft weekend has come and gone and the Cardinals did not select a quarterback making some think that the chances of them landing QB Kevin Kolb from the Philadelphia Eagles has increased.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that, while the lockout was briefly lifted last week, it’s possible the Cardinals discussed a trade with the Eagles. He also notes that the Cardinals opted to pass on Gabbert which tells him the Cardinals think they can find a way to get a Kolb trade done.

The move makes sense for both teams.

From Arizona’s perspective, they have the talent in place to compete right now. They had a poor 2010 season but that was with little quarterback help so they’ll be in the market for someone. Whether it’s Kolb or another veteran is the question.

From Philadelphia’s perspective, if they ever want to get compensation for Kolb, now’s the time. He’s entering the final year of his deal and they can’t sign both him and QB Michael Vick to long-term deals.

Whether this gets done may come down to the timing of the lockout. If the work stoppage moves into August or September, Kolb may now have enough time to switch teams and learn a new offense in order to effectively run it.
