Now, as Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican leaders conduct their own private meetings to resolve the state’s $5 billion projected deficit ahead of an expected Friday government shutdown, the Vikings say their stadium proposal will be ready for inclusion in any state budget solution.
The wrinkle that is bothering Minnesota politicians and probably the public at large is that the $650 million of public money in the $1 billion construction is being negotiated in secret. It appears that members of tax and transportation committees are left out of the loop and that public hearings have not yet been held.
New details on the final agreement have been promised for weeks, but days have come and passed without any announcements.
After the collapse of the Metrodome roof in December, it became abundantly clear that the Vikings needed a new stadium sooner rather than later.
