Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward was arrested for DUI several weeks ago and he's maintained his innocence throughout the process. Some Steelers fans were understandably upset at Ward for his off the field transgression but it was a Baltimore Ravens player who caused headlines with his reaction.
Ray Rice Stands By Comments About Hines Ward After DUI
Ravens RB Ray Rice said on Twitter that Ward's DUI wasn't a good look which prompted several Steelers players to respond to him via Twitter. And then of course the media got ahold of it and made it a whole big thing.
Despite the story that Rice’s words became, he stands by them all.
"People look up to you, Hines," said Rice, who is hosting a football camp at Towson University this week. "You just were on TV with Dancing with the Stars. Ravens fans were upset that you won Dancing with the Stars but they still watched you. That shows your charisma and character. You've got a legacy in the NFL that no one can take away from you. But if you hurt somebody drunk driving, that takes away a lot."
He’s right -- but was it the right spot for Rice to say something? I’m not sure but any situation that involves someone speaking out against drunk driving has to be right on some level.
Rice has a personal connection to drunk driving as he had a cousin killed by a drunk driver in 1998 so it strikes a different chord with him than it might with others.
Rice also said something that makes any NFL player driving drunk seem pretty ridiculous: “We make enough money. It’s $150 for a car service for the rest of the night.”
