NFL Free Agency 2011: Santonio Holmes Likely To Stay With Jets, Or Go To Redskins

Santonio Holmes, unfortunately, may be a victim of his own success. Or, maybe, just of bad timing. If he had become a free agent after the 2009 season, he might have been in line for a huge payday. Following up his Super Bowl XLIII MVP performance, he gained 1,248 yards and scored five touchdowns for the Pittsburgh Steelers that year. Instead, he encountered some off-the-field issues and was traded to the New York Jets for a fifth-round draft pick.

Despite sitting out the first four games of the 2010 season while serving a suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, Holmes still managed to post decent numbers: 52 catches, 746 cards and six touchdowns. The safe bet right now seems to be that he’ll remain with the Jets. A lot of that could have to do with his price tag.

With both Holmes and teammate Braylon Edwards becoming free agents, there’s a good chance the Jets may have to choose one of them. And if Holmes gets a big money offer from someone else, he could be leaving New York. There probably aren’t a whole lot of teams willing to spend serious money on a player with his past and coming off a good, but not great year.

If any team is willing to spend, though, it's probably the Washington Redskins, who have already been rumored to have serious interest in him. Holmes is the kind of player Redskins owner Daniel Snyder seems to love and if Mike Shanahan is really on board, it could be a perfect match.
