The competition for the top free agent on the market, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, is turning into a family affair. NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reports the Asomugha sweepstakes are now down to the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.
Nnamdi Asomguha Sweepstakes: 49ers Out; Reportedly Down To Jets, Cowboys
The Jets head coach is Rex Ryan and the Cowboys defensive coordinator is Rob Ryan and both guys are trying to haul in Asomugha.
Lombardi reports the San Francisco 49ers, who were reportedly one of the teams involved in Asomugha, are telling other folks that they're not in it anymore.
So it comes down to the Jets and Cowboys. Both teams have been cutting quite a bit of cap room suggesting they’re making room for a big signing. Asomugha could be looking at a deal that pays him in the $12-14 million range so they’ll need some salary cap room to make it happen.
The Jets most recently released QB Mark Brunell and reports are suggesting that the move was done in order to create more cap room for Asomugha, if they can get him.
We should be hearing a decision soon. Teams can have players officially sign contracts at 6:00 p.m. (ET) Friday night.
