NFL Free Agency Rumors: Donte Whitner, Bengals Have ‘Good Chance’ At Agreement, According To Report

Donte Whitner may have a new NFL home soon enough. ESPN's John Clayton reports that there is a "good chance" Whitner and the Cincinnati Bengals could come to an agreement. The Bengals are in need of a safety, as the team has struggled to find a healthy body at the position over the last few seasons. Roy Williams and Chris Crocker have all missed significant time due to injury (see Cincy Jungle for a complete breakdown on the struggles at the position).

Whitner was the eighth overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2006 NFL Draft and has turned into an effective run-stopping safety. As a result, he isn't much of a ballhawk, picking off five passes in his career. He finished the 2010 season with a career-high 94 solo tackles.

The Cleveland Browns had at one point looked like the front-runners to sign Whitner since their defensive coordinator is Dick Jauron, the coach who drafted Whitner while at the helm in Buffalo. That chance, however, passed with the signing of local product Usama Young
