Former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel has been hired by the Indianapolis Colts as a gameday consultant, according to a report.
Jim Tressel Effectively Suspended, Will Not Work For Colts Until Week 7
It turns out Jim Tressel won’t escape punishment for his role in an Ohio State scandal involving impermissible benefits while making the transition to NFL coaching. CBS Sports’ Mike Freeman reports that the Indianapolis Colts have decided to begin Tressel’s employment in Week 7 of the 2011 NFL season, effectively suspending the former Buckeyes head coach from his new position as the Colts’ game-day consultant for six weeks.

Tressel was hired by Colts head coach Jim Caldwell to serve as a “game-day consultant”, assisting on such decisions such as replay challenges. Florio reports that the league must approve such hires, and that it had not received notification of the Tressel hire before the announcement.
An unfettered entry into the NFL coaching ranks presents a problem for the league office, which suspended Pryor for the first five weeks of the 2011 regular season upon his entry into the league via last month’s Supplement Draft.While the league insists that the Pryor suspension is not related to the activities in college, it matches the five-game suspension Tressel imposed upon Pryor in order for the quarterback to play in Sugar Bowl in January.

Within minutes, the questions about the Indianapolis Colts’ decision to hire Jim Tressel came rolling in. After all, just a few weeks ago the NFL decided to suspend former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor as a condition of his inclusion into the NFL Supplemental Draft. So, naturally, many began asking when Tressel would suffer the same fate, and be forced to sit-out the first five weeks of the season without pay.

So what’s former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel going to be doing during the football season?
I’m not even sure what a gameday consultant does, and why someone with the profile of Tressel would be considered for that job. Perhaps it’s a regional thing since he’s in the area but I just don’t understand it with the Ohio State scandal barely in the rearview mirror.
