Soiled Ohio St. Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel didn't get far since leaving Columbus, emerging elsewhere in Big Ten country as the Indianapolis Colts' newest game-day consultant. His primary task will be telling Jim Caldwell when to throw a challenge flag. Stop laughing. Alerting Jim Caldwell to on-field action is harder than it looks, and requires an executive's talents.
Jim Tressel Hired By Colts, Will Be Suspended Any Minute Now
Tressel, you'll recall, was fired by Ohio State after being suspended for knowing about some shady stuff his players were doing. If NFL offices operated according to precedent -- which, of course they don't -- Caldwell would be working without his eye in the sky for almost a third of the Colts season.
The NFL chose to carry over a five-game suspension the NCAA levied against Tressel's quarterback, Terrelle Pryor. Roger Goodell never explained to anybody's satisfaction how Pryor's suspension didn't amount to enforcing the NCAA's rules for them, and he won't go out of his way to explain why Tressel shouldn't be suspended even though Pryor was.
Of course, there’s not necessarily preferential treatment here. Maybe Goodell, like the rest of us, doesn’t even know what a game-day consultant is.
