Jim Tressel Hire Being Reviewed By NFL, Was Not Cleared By League Office

The Indianapolis Colts' hiring of former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is currently under review by the National Football League, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports.

Tressel was hired by Colts head coach Jim Caldwell to serve as a “game-day consultant”, assisting on such decisions such as replay challenges. Florio reports that the league must approve such hires, and that it had not received notification of the Tressel hire before the announcement.

The 58-year old Tressel had been suspended five games after admitting that he had failed to disclose information regarding the activities of several of his players, including Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor. After 11 seasons as the Buckeyes head coach, Tressel resigned in May and had visited multiple NFL training camps this summer.

An unfettered entry into the NFL coaching ranks presents a problem for the league office, which suspended Pryor for the first five weeks of the 2011 regular season upon his entry into the league via last month’s Supplement Draft. While the league insists that the Pryor suspension is not related to the activities in college, it matches the five-game suspension Tressel imposed upon Pryor in order for the quarterback to play in Sugar Bowl in January.

As Florio notes, allowing Tressel to coach in the NFL, while Pryor must sit for five games, would feed the perception that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has a double standard when it comes to doling out discipline.
