It turns out Jim Tressel won’t escape punishment for his role in an Ohio State scandal involving impermissible benefits while making the transition to NFL coaching. CBS Sports’ Mike Freeman reports that the Indianapolis Colts have decided to begin Tressel’s employment in Week 7 of the 2011 NFL season, effectively suspending the former Buckeyes head coach from his new position as the Colts’ game-day consultant for six weeks.

The Colts made their reasoning clear in a statement:
”After the announcement of Coach Jim Tressel’s agreement to join the Colts as a game day consultant, questions were raised with respect to the equity of his appointment as opposed to suspensions being served this season by present and former Ohio State players.
“At Coach Tressel’s suggestion, and with Mr. Irsay’s concurrence and support, we have decided to begin Coach Tressel’s employment effective with our seventh regular season game. We have informed the league office of our decision and expect that they will be supportive of it.”
Tressel’s six-game “suspension” is comparable to the five-game suspension handed down by the NFL to former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, but it’s possible that the NFLPA will still use the discrepancy between the league and a team handing down suspensions in appealing Pryor’s suspension.
Tressel was expected to primarily serve as an assistant to Jim Caldwell and help the Colts head coach make judgments on replay challenges.
