Browns couldn’t score from a yard against 10 men

I cackled when I saw this:
Not that I didn’t trust Dustin, but I just had to go back and look. Sure enough, the Browns somehow managed to fail to score on third-and-1 against a defense with just 10 men. Let’s go back and analyze what went wrong.

Stafford and Johnson have been building a rapport over the last few seasons and it is coming to full fruition this season. They found each other for seven catches, 108 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson is on pace to catch 32 touchdowns, but that is likely out of reach.

Getty ImagesRyan threw for 330 yards in the loss, but threw an interception and lost two fumbles, while Falcons runners gained just 30 yards combined. Tampa Bay’s offense was less productive, but Freeman made up for two interceptions with a rushing touchdown, and Blount ran for 81 yards.
The win moves Tampa Bay to 2-1 on the season and drops the Falcons to 1-2, and it’s also the first Bucs win over the Falcons since 2008.

The Kansas City Chiefs are still alive, despite a rash of injuries that have depleted the team of some of their biggest weapons. After falling behind division rival San Diego on Sunday, the Chiefs have engineered a comeback and now trail the Chargers, 20-17.
Matt Cassel found Leonard Pope for one yard and the touchdown with five minutes to go, cutting the Chargers lead to three. Cassel has 153 yards and two touchdowns through the air on the day, one of which went to Pope and the other of which went to Dwayne Bowe. Dexter McCluster and Thomas Jones, carrying the load with Jamaal Charles sidelined, have combined for 76 yards on the ground thus far.

The Green Bay Packers are passing their first NFC North test of the 2011 NFL season, and Jermichael Finley’s the biggest reason they’re acing it and crushing the Chicago Bears.
Finley’s hauled in three touchdown passes from Aaron Rodgers, the latest a 10-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter, to put the Packers up 27-10 on the Bears at Soldier Field.

The Jets and Raiders are locked up in a close game in Oakland, and Darren McFadden and Denarius Moore running wild have given the Raiders the edge in the fourth quarter.
McFadden’s got 152 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but it was wide receiver Moore’s 23-yard touchdown run that gave Oakland a 24-17 lead early in the fourth quarter. Beyond McFadden — who’s gained more yardage on the ground than Oakland’s passing game has racked up — there really isn’t much to write home about for either offense.

The St. Louis Rams scored their first touchdown of the game in the third quarter. They trail the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 30-7.
Baltimore came out swinging. Rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith totaled more than 130 yards and three touchdowns, including a 74-yard touchdown pass. On defense, the Ravens were their usual aggressive selves. They kept quarterback Sam Bradford on his toes, locking down his receivers and harassing him behind the line of scrimmage.

You’d think this was a joke, but it is, apparently, a serious report (via Greg Bedard).
Fans did not storm the field and carry the goalposts off into the sunset, so all the preventative work was for naught. Still, the whole story seems just a little ridiculous. Why not let Bills fans take ‘em down? It was a big win, and the Bills are 3-0 to start the season.

Getty ImagesThe New England offense continued its hot start to the season. Tom Brady had his third game with more than 300 passing yards. He finished the day with 386 yards, four touchdown and four interceptions. Those four interceptions were as many as Brady totaled in all of last season, and they proved to the difference.
New England will try to regroup with a trip to Oakland next week. Week four aside, both of these teams will be eager for the rematch scheduled for week 17 at Gillette Stadium.

Josh Freeman has Tampa Bay’s only touchdown thanks to a one-yard goal line scramble. His score and two field goals have the Buccaneers leading their division rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, by a score of 13-3 at the half.
Matt Ryan is 14 -for-24 for 152 yards and one interception. Most surprising of all is that running back Michael Turner has just nine yards on seven carries as the Falcons struggled through two quarters of play.

NFL Scores Week 3, Lions Vs. Vikings: Calvin Johnson Sparks Huge Comeback

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - SEPTEMBER 25: Matthew Stafford #9 of the Detroit Lions looks to pass against the Minnesota Vikings at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on September 25, 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Adam Bettcher /Getty Images) Getty ImagesThe Vikings dominated this game early, taking a 20-0 lead into halftime. But when Detroit roared back to life in the second half, the Vikings could only respond with a mere three points in the second half -- and those didn’t come until there was 1:11 left in the fourth quarter.
But when the Vikings needed a critical first down on fourth-and-short in the second half, the Vikings turned to Toby Gerhart. The rookie thrives in short-yardage situations, but in hindsight it seems silly not to keep feeding Peterson the ball.

More impressively, all of them have displayed different kind of skills. His first touchdown, on his first career catch, was a 76-yarder in which he evaded some tacklers and streaked down the sideline. His next catch was an over-the-top catch for 41 yards. His third was one in which he battled the defender to grab an 18-yarder in the endzone.
Smith was the 58th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after a solid but not necessarily spectacular college career at Maryland. He did break out in his senior year, catching 12 touchdowns and compiling 1,055 receiving yards.
