Jerry Angelo Fired As Chicago Bears General Manager, According To Report

Surprise! The Bears have reportedly fired general manager Jerry Angelo, who has been with the team since 2001.

Every year there's at least one team that makes a surprise move in firing a head coach or a general manager. The firing of Bill Polian by the indianapolis Colts qualifies on Monday as a surprise but we have another one we didn't see coming -- Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo has been fired, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Angelo came to the Bears in 2001 and he’s the one that hired head coach Lovie Smith, who apparently wasn’t fired along with Angelo. The Bears won 10 or more games four times in Angelo’s career in Chicago.

Perhaps his biggest mistake in the 2011-12 NFL season was the absence of a qualified backup quarterback. The Bears were criticized for the way they handled the backup quarterback situation after Jay Cutler went down. Caleb Hanie was clearly not at a level in which the team could win and failing to secure a high level backup was ultimately what cost the Bears the playoffs.

The Bears GM job should be a coveted one. They’re a competitive team that has a defense built to win now and a quarterback in Cutler who is above average.
