Lions owners could consider firing Jim Schwartz, according to report

The Ford Family is reportedly not happy with the Detroit Lions’ ‘culture’ under coach Jim Schwartz.

After making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years last season, the Detroit Lions (4-11) have underachieved this season, needing a win over the Chicago Bears in Sunday's season finale to avoid closing the season on an eight-game losing streak. That performance, combined with several high-profile off-field incidents, could have Jim Schwartz in danger of losing his job despite being the coach that led them to that playoff appearance just a season ago.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com reported that concerns about the team’s ‘culture’ under Schwartz could prompt the Ford family, who owns the team, to make a coaching change in the offseason. Adam Schefter of ESPN.com also confirmed Mortensen’s report, adding this quote from an unidentified NFL executive: “Just heard Mort on Jim Schwartz. I believe he is right. The Fords can not be happy.”

The Lions had six players arrested for various infractions in the offseason. Star defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh has been involved in controversial on-field and off-field incidents during his career so far and even Schwartz himself has been caught in high profile incidents, including a shouting match with San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh last season.

Schwartz is 22-41 in four season as Detroit’s coach.
