Bears vs. Lions, Week 17: Disappointing day in Detroit

The Detroit Lions fell to the Chicago Bears on Sunday to end a disappointing season in a disappointing manner.

The Detroit Lions capped off their disappointing season in typical fashion, losing to yet another NFC North opponent in the Chicago Bears to finish the year without a divisional win.

The loss runs Detroit’s losing streak to eight games.

Mistakes and turnovers, two flaws which have defined the Lions' 2012 season, reared their ugly head again, as the Lions turned the ball over three times. Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett scored Chicago's first touchdown on a simple screen pass that went 60 yards thanks to missed tackles. The tackling was poor from start to finish, proven on Matt Forte's final run that went through several Lions defenders to run out the clock and end the game.

Sean Yuille of SB Nation’s Detroit Lions blog, Pride of Detroit, writes that Sunday’s performance was nothing more than a microcosm of the entire season.

In any case, Sunday’s game was really the latest case of all of the Lions’ issues being summed up in one game. The Lions didn’t take care of the ball, couldn’t put together consistent drives on offense, gave up big plays on defense, made mistakes on special teams and still had a chance to win only to come up short in the end. The entire season pretty much played out in one afternoon at Ford Field.

The game also proved to disappoint in the historical aspect, as Calvin Johnson did not reach 2,000 receiving yards and Matthew Stafford did not reach 5,000 passing yards. The loss drops to Lions to 4-12 on the season and gives them the fifth overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.
