What Does Brandon Marshall Trade Mean For Dolphins Pursuit Of Peyton Manning?

The Miami Dolphins have traded Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears in exchange for two second round picks. On the surface, it's an odd move for Miami to make considering Marshall has finished with more than 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first two seasons in Miami. He's not a bad player. So why give him up for two third round picks?

Like everything else in the NFL lately, we're wondering if this is somehow related to free agent Peyton Manning. Consider this from the Sun-Sentinel last week regarding the Dolphins pursuit of Manning:

Marshall, in particular, could be viewed as a drag on the Dolphins' pursuit of Manning.

While Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who traveled to Indianapolis to have dinner with Manning last month and was omnipresent during No. 18's desert tour over the weekend, is considered quarterback-friendly, Marshall is openly battling "borderline personality disorder" and has a reputation for being high maintenance.

I can already see what Dolphins fans are thinking: Marshall's exit opens the door for the Colts to bring in Reggie Wayne, which will then convince Manning to come to South Florida. It's a fair question considering how desperately the Dolphins (and others) want Manning.

Manning has visited the Broncos and Cardinals already. He also met with Dolphins coach Joe Philbin and plans to meet with the Titans as well.
