OTA Schedule Starts This Week For Most NFL Teams

Organized Team Activities (OTA) are picking up this week for most NFL teams. OTAs are essentially a series of practices but do not include pads nor live hitting.

Many NFL teams are moving into the third phase of their offseason program this week as Organized Team Activities (OTAs) are starting. The first phase of the offseason program focused on conditioning, the second phase focused on on-field instruction from the coaches and the third phase, OTAs, is as close to a regular practice as we’ll see before training camp.

Here is the relevant section of the CBA as it pertains to OTAs:

During Phase Three, all coaches shall be allowed on the field. No live contact is permitted. No one-on-one offense vs. defense drills are permitted (i.e., no offensive linemen vs. defensive linemen pass rush or pass protection drills, no wide receivers vs. defensive backs bump-and-run drills, and no one-on-one special teams drills involving both offense and defense are permitted). Special teams drills (e.g., kicking team vs. return team) are permitted, provided no live contact occurs. Team offense vs. team defense drills, including all drills listed in Appendix G to this Agreement, are permitted, provided no live contact occurs. Clubs may require players to wear helmets; no shells are permitted during Phase Three of the Club’s offseason workout program or any minicamp.

So, it’s a practice but not really. There are no pads and no hitting.

Most of the teams with new head coaches started their OTA schedule last week as they can begin the offseason program earlier than teams with returning head coaches. Here is the OTA schedule for every team:
