Safety Ed Reed has been a fixture of the Baltimore Ravens defense since 2002, when the team selected him with the 24th pick in the first round of the draft that year. In 2013, Reed could be all set to dip his toes in the waters of free agency when his contract runs out after this season, and the Ravens might just let him do that, according to a report from ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Ravens To Let Ed Reed Test Free Agency In 2013?
Baltimore could follow a similar path with Reed as they did with Ray Lewis in 2009, letting him test the waters of free agency before extending him a deal. Reed was reported to be seeking an extension with the Ravens this year, and publicly mulled retirement earlier in the spring.
Reed turns 34 in September, putting him firmly in the twilight of his career. Teams could be leery of signing a player who turns 35 at the start of the 2013 season, setting up the potential for the Ravens to give him a smaller deal.
Reed had three interceptions and 60 total tackles during the regular season in 2011.
