Redskins’ Roy Helu Likely Out Vs. Bears

Redskins second-year running back Roy Helu will likely sit out for Washington's second preseason game against the Bears. Helu is experiencing issues with his left Achilles. The team has cited the problem as tendonitis, and Helu spent practice this week on the sidelines with his helmet off during 11-on-11 scrimmaging. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Shanahan said the problem will likely keep him out for the Bears game on Saturday night (via Chris Russell of ESPN 980):

Shanahan is well-known for using a running-back-by-committee system and Helu is battling with Tim Hightower and Evan Royster for the starting spot. He came on strong and productive at the end of last season, even breaking Art Monk's single-game receptions record at one point.

Helu did play in the Skins first preseason game in Buffalo, carrying the ball four times for 17 yards. But with soreness around such a dangerous tendon, Shanahan and the Redskins are certainly going to be cautious during the preseason.
