Panthers’ Steve Smith Misses Practice With Foot Infection

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith missed Wednesday's practice with an infection in his left foot, according to The Charlotte Observer. Smith returned to Bank of America Stadium on crutches with the team trainer, but he is not expected to miss any significant time. Smith caught one pass for 15 yards in last week's exhibition win over Miami, but has only practiced once since.

Entering his twelfth season, Smith has become the main receiving target for Carolina quarterback Cam Newton. Smith had 79 catches for nearly 1400 yards and seven touchdowns last season. According to the Observer, Carolina's No. 2 receiver Brandon LaFell didn't seem too concerned about the injury, calling Smith "an Ironman."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera hopes to have more information on Smith after talking to the team medical staff. The Panthers take on the Jets in their next preseason game, this Sunday at 8:00 EST. They open the season on September 9 at Tampa Bay.
